Union County man charged with murder
By SHEA WILSON Managing Editor A Union County man has been charged with second-degree murder in the New Year’s Day beating death of his stepfather.
James Thornton Brown, 20, of 3822 Strong Hwy., will have his first appearance this afternoon in Union County District Court, Sheriff Ken Jones said Monday .
Sheriff’s deputies received a call around 6:30 p.m. Sunday about a fight that had resulted in severe injuries and the need for an ambulance at 3838 Strong Hwy.
Upon arrival, deputies found Robbie Fincher, 42. He was transported by Pro-Med Ambulance Service to Medical Center of South Arkansas, Jones said.
"Fincher died shortly after arriving at MCSA from injuries sustained in the fight."
Jones said Fincher’s injuries were multiple and were to his head. "His stepson admitted to inflicting the injuries," Jones said. "His injuries were to the head. He beat him with his fists. A plastic flashlight was the only object used."
The flashlight was found broken at the crime scene, he said. Jones said the fight was over a vehicle for sale on Fincher’s property, which is next door to where Brown lives.
"It had something to do with an automobile there in his (Fincher’s) front yard, something to do with the sale of it the best we can tell," the sheriff said.
