Suspect arrested in non-lethal shooting of Strong resident
Investigators with the Union County Sheriff’s Offi ce have arrested a suspect in Monday’s non-lethal shooting of an area resident.
Darryl Hicks, 24, of Strong, was arrested and charged Monday with fi rst-degree battery after witnesses reported a shooting in Strong involving his alleged victim, Kenneth Newton, 24.
Newton was transferred to Medical Center of South Arkansas Monday where he is recovering from surgery following injury to his leg.
Hicks allegedly used a semi automatic handgun to shoot Newton three times, although a motive for the shooting has not yet been established, ac cording to investigators. Of fi cers recovered several 9 mm casings consistent with a semi-automatic weapon at the scene of the alleged incident. Hicks is being held in cus tody until making his fi rst appearance in district court today.
Hicks faced similar charges in May 2004, though prosecu tors dropped the case when his alleged victim chose not to pursue charges.
