John H. Cornish

John H. Cornish
Law and Order at Union County's inception was directed through the efforts of John H. Cornish. John Cornish was the sheriff and tax collector for 18 years. His duties forced him to take supplies on horesback, and camp out in the wilderness at night while making his annual tax collections. Cornish was required by the law at the time to execute three criminals. Cornish owned a large plantation three miles south of El Dorado to which he retired before his death. Cornish was born in Lauderdale County, Alabama 1833 and died on December 21,1868.
